People Like Us: Poem by Stephanie Smith
PEOPLE LIKE US
Stephanie Smith
We fall asleep in cages that
Cannot contain our dreams
Locked in a room of memories we are
Naked and alone
Alive, yet dead
And waiting for the end to come
Hell was made for people like us
With its chaotic walls that ripple and moan
That contort the flesh into grotesque shapes
And fill mankind with fright
We hunt angels in the night
Strip the meat from their delicate bones
We devour skin
Like a book we can't stop reading
As if it's all that we have left
In a sense we might be right
